PSYLock

a typing behaviour based psychometrical authentication method

A critical point in securing computer systems and electronic transactions against misuse is the verification of the user's identity (authentication). Passwords, smart card systems, and other methods often, for various reasons, do not offer the necessary security. However, biometrical systems that are based on the biological features of the user are very promising.

The PSYLock method uses the fact that each computer user demonstrates an individual typing behaviour. The individual typing behaviour is characterized by the writing dynamics and by the underlying psychometrical features such as left and/or right-handedness or key finger placing. These criteria can be measured by using standard hardware and can be used for identity verification of the computer user.

The typing process is viewed as a chance experiment and is modelled with the help of appropriate distribution functions. With the respective estimations for the model parameters, the necessary sizes can be determined to create the reference model. Furthermore, with the model assumptions, test sizes can be calculated that will be suitable for the analysis of the data that has been measured during the authentication process. A neuronal network provides the most optimal information analysis of the observed psychometrical individual features.

easy installation, scaleable security

Compared to other biometrical methods, PSYLock offers a number of advantages:

  • It works with standard keyboards and is easily installed even for the use in large scale operations.
  • The typing behaviour is a significant and personally individual feature, which cannot be copied.
  • PSYLock is scaleable for different security applications.
  • Security is dependent upon the length of the typing sample. This opens up some room for the respective individually required security levels for the different applications. This scaling of security is only given for certain psychometric features (typing behaviour, voice, lip movement). In the case of purely biometrical features such as fingerprints, iris scan, etc, this possibility does not exist.

Potential applications of PSYLock include:

  • access protection for computer networks,
  • protecting access to data and programs,
  • supplementing and/or substituting passwords,
  • running background authentication, for example in e-mails,
  • secure home-banking,
  • use in telecommuting,
  • use in long-distance services,
  • and authenticating digital signatures, together with the smart card.
